The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa has assured Ghanaians that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) shall continue to play its role in maintaining the stability of the country while protecting law-abiding citizens.
Lt Gen Akwa gave the assurance when he opened a two-day GAF Commanders and Staff Conference on Thursday, 17 September 2020 at the Royal Cozy Hotel in Jirapa in the Upper West Region.
He added that GAF shall however, not countenance trouble makers who will seek to threaten the peace of the land or interfere with the duties of troops in the performance of their lawful duties. Lt Gen Akwa said the conference was to create a forum for participants to engage in transparent discourse out of which would emerge decisions that would address the theme of the conference; “Towards a Peaceful 2020 General Elections: The Role of GAF”. He therefore urged participants to contribute meaningfully in order to come up with plans and procedures to enhance GAF’s effectiveness.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Jirapa Municipal Assembly, Hon Christine Bombanye-Amadu, said security remains the highest priority of any government as it also deepens democracy, ensures safety of citizens and stabilizes every country. She noted that the conference will thus enable participants to assess their performance and also strategize for the future, adding that the 2020 elections was key and therefore she hoped it would underpin the deliberations. Hon Bombanye-Amadu was happy that the Military High Command chose to hold such an important programme in Jirapa.
Present at the function were Service Chiefs of GAF, Formation Commanders and Staff Officers from the General and Service Headquarters. Also in attendance were members of the Jirapa Municipal Security Committee.
